Øresund Bridge

Driving across the Øresund to Sweden

The Øresund Bridge links Copenhagen on the Danish side with Malmö in southern Sweden, and has been the fixed road and rail link across the Øresund strait since 2000. If you're driving your own car or motorhome into Sweden, this is the fastest land route: on the Danish side the crossing starts with a tunnel running under the approach to Copenhagen Airport, continues over the artificial island of Peberholm, and then becomes the nearly 8-kilometre cable-stayed bridge into Malmö.

The crossing is toll-based, and you pay on the Swedish side. A quick alternative to the bridge is the Helsingør - Helsingborg ferry. Current toll rates are in the price table further down this page.

From Copenhagen to Malmö

Built in 2000, the Øresund Bridge links Sweden with Denmark and is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. Including its approach spans, the cable-stayed bridge measures almost 8,000 metres; its 206-metre pylons support a span of 490 metres. It was built in just 40 months. On the Danish side, the crossing begins with a tunnel running under the approach to Copenhagen Airport out to the artificial island of Peberholm. From there, the 7,854-metre bridge continues above ground into Malmö.

Prices & tickets

Crossing the Øresund Bridge is toll-based. The following rates apply to a one-way crossing:

  • The BroPas is an annual subscription that pays off from just one return crossing. It also comes with a free transponder (Bizz), letting you pass through the toll station in a dedicated, faster Bizz lane.
  • The toll station is on the Swedish side of the bridge. There you pay by card or cash, in euros, Danish kroner or Swedish kronor.
  • Since 2018 there have been online tickets for the bridge, which save you around 10%.

Combining the bridge with a ferry

If you're using a ferry on your way to Denmark (the Vogelfluglinie Puttgarden - Rødby or Rostock - Gedser), a combined ticket saves you time and money. The bridge ticket is valid for seven days, so you can also fit in a stopover in Copenhagen.

Alternatives to the Øresund Bridge

The bridge isn't the only way to drive into Sweden — plenty of ferry routes get you there too. The shortest alternative is the Helsingør - Helsingborg ferry; see the homepage for an overview of all routes.

FAQ Øresund Bridge

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your questions about crossing the Øresund Bridge

How much does it cost to cross the Øresund Bridge?+

The bridge is toll-based; the price depends on your vehicle's length and type. A car up to 6 metres pays the least, while trailers and motorhomes cost more. With an ØresundGO membership (a fixed annual fee) you cross for well below the standard rate. Current amounts in DKK are in the price table above.

Where and how do I pay the toll?+

The toll station is on the Swedish side of the bridge. You can pay by card or cash, in euros, Danish kroner or Swedish kronor. With the free Bizz transponder you pass through a dedicated, faster lane.

How long is the Øresund Bridge and what is it used for?+

Opened in 2000, the crossing including its approach spans is about 8 kilometres long, making it the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. On the Danish side the route starts as a tunnel out to the artificial island of Peberholm, then becomes the 7,854-metre cable-stayed bridge into Malmö. It carries both cars and trains.

Can I combine the bridge with a ferry crossing?+

Yes. If you're arriving from Germany via the Vogelfluglinie Puttgarden - Rødby or via Rostock - Gedser, you can book a combined ticket. The bridge ticket is valid for seven days, so a stopover in Copenhagen is possible along the way.

What are the alternatives to the Øresund Bridge?+

Instead of the bridge, you can also reach Sweden by ferry. The shortest crossing is Helsingør - Helsingborg, taking around 20 minutes over the Øresund. Other routes run from Kiel, Travemünde or Rostock. See the homepage for an overview of all routes.
