Helsingør - Helsingborg

Øresundslinjen links the two towns round the clock, every 20 minutes during the day. The crossing takes 20 minutes. The Port of Helsingborg calls the route one of the busiest strait crossings in the world, and according to Øresundslinjen more than 6 million passengers use it every year. Terminal and check-in

In Helsingborg the ferries dock right in the town centre, at the Helsingborg C hub, where the railway station, bus station and ferry terminal are under one roof. Vehicles enter and exit via Bredgatan 5 (252 25 Helsingborg); foot passengers board directly from Helsingborg C. In Helsingør you check in with a vehicle at Færgevej 8, and on foot at Færgevej 9.

With a vehicle and an online or app ticket, you need to be at check-in at least 10 minutes before departure, or 5 minutes with a commuter card, and 5 minutes on foot too. If you buy your ticket only at the terminal, you take the next available sailing. The terminals in Helsingborg have been cashless since 2022, so have a card ready. There can be border checks at both Helsingør and Helsingborg, so make sure everyone travelling carries ID in their hand luggage.

Getting there and parking

From Germany, after arriving at Rødby or Gedser, follow the motorway towards Copenhagen and then the E47 to Helsingør, where signs lead you to the ferry port. In Helsingør there is paid parking for foot passengers at the terminal, with the first 15 minutes free.

Without a car, Helsingborg is especially easy: trains from Copenhagen run to Helsingør, and the station is a few minutes' walk from the pier. On the Swedish side you arrive at Helsingborg C, where trains and buses depart across Skåne and beyond.

Onward travel from Helsingborg

Helsingborg sits on the E6. Heading north it runs via Halmstad to Gothenburg, and south to Malmö. For the return leg, a loop via the Öresund works well: back to Denmark via Malmö and the Öresund Bridge. If you'd rather skip the detour via Denmark on the way home, take the direct ferry from Trelleborg to Rostock or Travemünde.

Which route is right for you?

• From Hamburg and western Germany: Puttgarden - Rødby, the shortest Baltic crossing, then on to Helsingør.
• From Berlin and eastern Germany: Rostock - Gedser saves the drive via Fehmarn.
• Bridge instead of ferry: if Malmö is your destination, go via Copenhagen and the Öresund Bridge straight into Sweden.
• Without a car: take the train to Helsingør, walk on board, and step straight onto a Swedish train at Helsingborg C.
