Eckerö - Grisslehamn is the short ferry route between Åland's west coast and Roslagen. Eckerö Linjen's M/S Eckerö takes just two hours for the crossing and sails three times a day from Eckerö, with a car, bike or on foot.
Departing from Eckerö
The terminal is in Berghamn on Eckerövägen in AX-22270 Eckerö. A scheduled bus runs between the bus stand in Mariehamn and the port for every departure and arrival; you can add the ticket when booking. On foot, you check in at the terminal's self-service machines; they open two hours before departure and close ten minutes before sailing. All passengers and vehicles must be checked in at least 30 minutes before departure, or 45 minutes from June to August. Bring a valid photo ID: passport or national ID card, though citizens of Nordic countries may also show a driving licence. Eckerö Linjen also sells Åland travel packages in the terminal.
The crossing
The M/S Eckerö was built in Aalborg in 1979, is 121 metres long and carries up to 1,635 passengers and 200 cars. On board you can eat à la carte at the Rospiggen restaurant, at the Bornholm buffet, or in the Käringsund café with its play area; there's also the Byholma bistro, the Klubb Kuling bar with live music, and the Magasin Märket tax-free shop. With a car, campervan, bike or dog
Cars and motorbikes travel too; motorbikes are parked on their side stand in first gear. Electric and hybrid cars are allowed if undamaged, and fuel may only travel in the tank. Arrival in Grisslehamn and onward travel
The terminal in Grisslehamn is at Skatuddsvägen 10. Eckerö Linjen runs daily connecting buses with Västanhede Trafik, including via Norrtälje and Danderyd to the Cityterminalen in Stockholm and to Uppsala; these buses do not take bicycles, and dogs only in a carrier. Timetable, season and prices
Eckerö Linjen sails daily all year round, departing Eckerö at 08:00, 13:30 and 18:30 local time. A few sailings are cancelled around Christmas and New Year, and the line pauses for dry dock from 7 to 28 January 2027. Extra sailings are added around Ascension Day and Midsummer. Eckerö lies on the west coast of the Åland Islands, and Grisslehamn faces it on the Roslagen coast north of Stockholm. Between the two lies the Åland Sea, which the ferry crosses in two hours.
Eckerö Linjen operates the route daily all year round with the M/S Eckerö. From Eckerö, the ship departs three times a day: morning, early afternoon and evening.
