Eckerö - Grisslehamn is the short ferry link between Åland's west coast and Roslagen. Eckerö Linjen's M/S Eckerö takes just two hours for the crossing and sails three times a day from Eckerö, whether you're travelling by car, bike or on foot.
Departure in Eckerö
The terminal is in Berghamn on Eckerövägen, AX-22270 Eckerö. A scheduled bus connects the bus stop in Mariehamn with the port for every departure and arrival; you can add the ticket when booking. Foot passengers check in at the terminal kiosks, which open two hours before departure and close ten minutes before sailing. All passengers and vehicles must be checked in at least 30 minutes before departure, or 45 minutes from June to August. Bring a valid photo ID: a passport or national ID card; citizens of Nordic countries may also show a driving licence. Eckerö Linjen also sells travel packages for Åland at the terminal.
The crossing
The M/S Eckerö was built in Aalborg in 1979, is 121 metres long and carries up to 1,635 passengers and 200 cars. On board you can eat à la carte at Restaurant Rospiggen, at the Bornholm buffet or at Kafé Käringsund, which has a play area; there's also the Bistro Byholma, the Klubb Kuling bar with live music, and the Magasin Märket tax-free shop. By car, motorhome, bike or with a dog
Cars and motorbikes travel on board; motorbikes are secured on their side stand in first gear. Grisslehamn terminal: arrival and onward travel
The terminal in Grisslehamn is at Skatuddsvägen 10, SE-764 56 Grisslehamn, and is open daily from 08:30 to 20:00. For the return crossing, check-in closes 30 minutes before departure, or 45 minutes from June to August, and boarding ends 10 minutes before departure. Vehicles check in at the vehicle lane, while foot passengers collect their boarding pass at the terminal kiosks, which open two hours before departure, or ninety minutes before the 10:00 sailing. There's a cash machine to the right of the entrance. The car park at the terminal is chargeable, payable at the kiosk or via an app, and includes ten EV charging points. Motorhomes have their own spaces, but may only stand there on the day of travel and for one day at most; for longer stays, head to Grisslehamns Marina & Camping about a kilometre away. Eckerö Linjen runs connecting buses daily with Västanhede Trafik, including services via Norrtälje and Danderyd to Cityterminalen in Stockholm and to Uppsala; these buses don't take bicycles, and dogs are only allowed in a carrier. Timetable, season and prices
Eckerö Linjen sails year-round every day, departing Eckerö at 08:00, 13:30 and 18:30 local time. A handful of sailings are cancelled around Christmas and New Year, and the line pauses from 7 to 28 January 2027 for its annual dry-dock period. Eckerö lies on the west coast of the Åland Islands, with Grisslehamn opposite on the coast of Roslagen north of Stockholm. Between them lies the Åland Sea, which the ferry crosses in two hours.
Eckerö Linjen operates the route year-round with the M/S Eckerö, sailing daily. From Eckerö the ship departs three times a day: in the morning, early afternoon and evening.
