About Bornholmslinjen
Bornholmslinjen is the brand under which the Danish ferry company Molslinjen operates services to and from the Baltic island of Bornholm. From the island port of Rønne, ferries sail to Ystad in Sweden, to Køge on Zealand, and to Sassnitz on Rügen. Molslinjen took over the Bornholm services on 1 September 2018 and has run them under this name ever since.
On the fast route to Ystad, Bornholmslinjen operates the catamarans Express 1 and Express 5. The Express 1 is 112.6 metres long and 30.5 metres wide, was built by Incat in Tasmania, and reaches speeds of up to 40 knots; a lift connects the vehicle deck with the passenger deck. On the longer routes from Køge and Sassnitz, the Hammershus and the Povl Anker are in service. On board the catamarans you'll find Molly's Bistro and Barista's Coffee Shop.
History and group
Molslinjen is based in Aarhus and has sailed across the Kattegat since 1966. In 2018 the company won the tender for the Bornholm routes and took over Danske Færger A/S in the process. Since 2020, Molslinjen has been owned by the infrastructure fund EQT. In 2023 the Øresund ferry between Helsingør and Helsingborg joined the group, now sailing as Øresundslinjen. Today Molslinjen describes itself as Denmark's largest domestic ferry operator; the group's brands include Alslinjen, Bornholmslinjen, Fanølinjen, Langelandslinjen, Molslinjen, Samsølinjen and Øresundslinjen.
Bornholmslinjen to Sweden
For your journey to Sweden, the route that matters is Rønne - Ystad. The catamaran takes around 80 minutes; the route runs all year, with up to eight departures a day in each direction in summer, plus extra sailings at weekends and during holidays. With a Standard, Flex or Lowprice ticket you need to check in ten minutes before departure; electric cars with a reserved charging space, lorries, buses and passengers who need assistance should check in 30 minutes before. In Ystad, vehicles arrive via Bornholmsgatan and foot passengers at the Hamntorget 2 terminal; in Rønne, foot passengers depart from Dampskibskajen 5, while vehicles heading to Ystad use the Sverigesvej 1 entrance. Authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, so keep your passport or ID card handy.
Bornholmslinjen offers four fares: Lowprice is non-refundable, Flex can be rebooked onto another departure free of charge, Standard is refundable and can be changed up to three months in advance, and StandardPLUS up to twelve months in advance, with lounge access included. Children aged up to eleven travel free when accompanied by a paying adult.
