Mariehamn lies halfway between Finland and Sweden, and almost every large ferry to Stockholm calls here. So from Åland you can choose between several ships a day, with no changes and no long trip to the mainland first.
Departing from Mariehamn
The ferries dock in Västerhamn on the west side of town, on Hamngatan; Tallink Silja Line gives its terminal address as Hamngatan 24. Parking at the terminal is free, and the Tallink desk does not accept cash. With Tallink, check-in closes 15 minutes before departure; with a car, arrive 1.5 hours before on the Åland routes.
With Viking Line, check-in in Mariehamn opens 60 minutes before departure and closes 20 minutes before. The terminal has a taxi rank and lockers, and again, card payment only. You'll need ID with either operator.
The crossing
The ships come from Helsinki, Turku or Tallinn and, after calling at Mariehamn, sail across the Åland Sea and through the Stockholm archipelago. Tallink Silja Line takes around 6 hours 40 minutes, with the Silja Serenade or the Silja Symphony from Helsinki, and the Baltic Queen from Tallinn. Both depart Mariehamn at night: check-in for the Baltic Queen runs from 00:00 to 00:45, for the Silja ships from 03:45 to 04:45.
With Viking Line, the duration depends on the ship. The Viking Glory reaches Stockholm in around 5 1/2 hours, the Gabriella and the Viking Cinderella from Helsinki take longer, and the Birka Gotland around 8 hours. Because Åland is an hour ahead of Sweden, the clock on arrival shows an hour less than you actually spent on board. A cabin is worthwhile on the overnight sailings.
With a car, campervan, bike or dog
Cars, campervans and bicycles travel on the large scheduled ships. Tallink re-measures your vehicle's length and height at check-in. The Birka Gotland takes no vehicles on board. More on a campervan crossing under Travelling to Sweden with a campervan.
With Tallink, dogs travel on the Silja ships in a pet-friendly cabin with exercise space on Deck 12, and on the Baltic Queen in the kennel on Deck 3 or in a pet cabin. Pets may not stay in the car. Arrival in Stockholm and onward travel
Tallink Silja Line docks at Värtahamnen, Hamnpirsvägen 10. Gärdet metro station on the red line is within walking distance, bus 76 runs into the centre, and shuttle buses connect the terminal with the Cityterminalen. From Åland to Stockholm
Mariehamn is the main town of the Åland Islands and a stopover for almost every large ferry travelling from Finland and Estonia to Stockholm. You board in Mariehamn a ship already on its way from Helsinki, Turku or Tallinn, and reach the Swedish capital in around six to seven hours.
Two operators run the route all year: Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line. Together there are four departures a day, some by day and some in the middle of the night.
