About Eckerö Linjen
Eckerö Linjen connects Eckerö on the west coast of Åland across the Åland Sea with Grisslehamn in Roslagen. The company runs a single ship on this route, the M/S Eckerö, and also sells holiday packages to Åland from its offices in Eckerö and Grisslehamn.
The M/S Eckerö was built in 1979 at Aalborg Værft in Denmark and sails under the Swedish flag. She is 121 metres long, has 515 lane metres of vehicle deck and ice class 1B, and carries up to 1,635 passengers and 200 cars. On board you'll find the à la carte restaurant Rospiggen, the Bornholm buffet, the Käringsund café with a play area, the Byholma bistro, the Klubb Kuling bar with live music, and the Magasin Märket tax-free shop, along with conference rooms.
History and group
Eckerö Linjen belongs to the Eckerö Group. Its parent company, Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö, was founded on 2 March 1961. The group operates four ships between Sweden, Åland, Finland and Estonia, employs around 860 people, and carried around 3.2 million passengers in 2025. Alongside Eckerö Linjen, the group includes Eckerö Line, which sails between Helsinki and Tallinn, and the freight operator Eckerö Link between Långnäs and Naantali. Despite the similar name, Eckerö Line is a separate brand with no route to Sweden.
Eckerö Linjen to Sweden
The only route is Eckerö - Grisslehamn. The M/S Eckerö sails daily, leaving Grisslehamn at 10:00, 15:00 and 20:00, and Eckerö at 08:00, 13:30 and 18:30, all in local time; the crossing takes two hours. Around Christmas and New Year a few departures are cancelled, and in January 2027 the line pauses for three weeks for scheduled maintenance.
All passengers and vehicles must check in at least 30 minutes before departure, or 45 minutes from June to August. Bring a valid photo ID. Dogs travel in the Jungman pet room or in the designated areas, always on a lead. Connecting coaches run daily from Grisslehamn via Norrtälje to Stockholm and to Uppsala.
