Which connection suits your travel date?
Direct from Germany
Four ferry routes run without a detour from Germany to Sweden, and they differ mainly in how frequently they sail. Rostock - Trelleborg is the most frequent connection: several departures a day, round the clock, and the shortest crossing of the four. If you're heading to Malmö, Lund or on to Stockholm, you'll almost always find a suitable time here.
Travemünde - Trelleborg and Travemünde - Malmö run less often, but with an evening departure you can sleep through and a morning one. Both are the obvious choice if you're travelling from western or central Germany and find Lübeck easier to reach than Rostock.
Kiel - Gothenburg is the only true overnight ferry on offer: one departure a day in the evening, and you're in Gothenburg the next morning. For western Sweden and onward travel towards Oslo, that saves you a whole day of driving.
Via Denmark
If you're driving through Jutland, Frederikshavn - Gothenburg gets you across the Kattegat frequently and quickly. The crossing is considerably shorter than any direct route from Germany, but there are several hundred kilometres of road beforehand. Whether that's worth it depends on your starting point, not the timetable.
Shorter and more frequent still are the Öresund Bridge or Puttgarden - Rødby: both are land routes with a short crossing rather than a full ferry passage to Sweden. From Bornholm, Rønne - Ystad gets you to Skåne in 80 minutes, up to eight times a day.
From Poland, Norway and the Baltics
From Poland, overnight ferries run from Świnoujście to Ystad, Trelleborg and Malmö, and from Gdańsk to Nynäshamn; Gdynia - Karlskrona adds three departures a day, by day and overnight. From Norway, Sandefjord - Strömstad is the short daytime route across the Oslofjord. The Baltic routes from Tallinn, Paldiski, Ventspils and Klaipėda are all overnight ferries with one to three departures a day, some only on certain days of the week - so it's especially worth checking the exact date here.
From Finland and Åland
Across the northern Baltic, Viking Line and Tallink Silja sail every night from Helsinki to Stockholm and several times a day from Turku to Stockholm, each calling at Åland. Shorter still are the Åland routes to Kapellskär and Grisslehamn, with two to three departures a day; further north, Wasaline connects Vaasa with Umeå.
What to watch for in the timetable
The times above are the scheduled departures. Two things regularly shift them: the season - more ships run in summer than in November - and the day of the week, since several routes follow a different pattern at weekends than during the week. So look up your exact date rather than carrying over the weekly pattern from a different month.
Second, when travelling with a vehicle, the departure time isn't the real constraint - the vehicle deck is. This is especially true for motorhomes and car-and-trailer combinations in the summer holidays: a departure listed in the timetable doesn't guarantee space for a long vehicle on that day.
