If you live in east Åland or have holidayed there, you don't need to travel to Mariehamn first for the ferry to Stockholm. The ships from Turku on their way to Sweden call at Långnäs, every day of the year.
Departing from Långnäs
The terminal is at Långnäsvägen 656 in Lumparland, around 30 km and about half an hour's drive from Mariehamn. Åland's island buses stop at the terminal, and parking is free. The terminal is only open around ship arrivals and departures.
With Tallink Silja Line, check-in for foot passengers closes 30 minutes before departure, and 45 minutes before for cars. The Baltic Princess departs Långnäs at 00:40. With Viking Line, cars should check in at least 30 minutes before departure, vehicles over 2.40 m tall 45 minutes before; check-in closes 20 minutes before sailing. You'll need ID for either.
The crossing
Viking Line's Viking Grace takes around 6 hours 20 minutes, Tallink Silja Line's Baltic Princess around 6 hours 35 minutes. Because Åland is an hour ahead of Sweden, the clock shows an hour less on arrival. After the Åland Sea, the route continues through the Stockholm archipelago.
Since the Baltic Princess departs in the middle of the night, a cabin is worthwhile; you sleep through the crossing and wake up in Stockholm. On board, Tallink accepts cash in euros only, and most bars are cashless.
With a car, campervan, bike or dog

Dogs travel on the Baltic Princess in a pet-friendly cabin for up to three animals, with exercise space on outdoor Deck 6 with a sand pit. Arrival in Stockholm and onward travel
Tallink Silja Line docks at Värtahamnen, Hamnpirsvägen 10. Gärdet metro station on the red line is within walking distance, bus 76 runs into the centre, and shuttle buses connect the terminal with the Cityterminalen.
