The Finnlines ferry carries you from Långnäs in the east of Åland to Kapellskär in Roslagen in around three and a half hours. It comes from Naantali in Finland and calls at Långnäs on its way to Sweden. You sail in the afternoon or in the middle of the night, with a car, bike or on foot.
Departing from Långnäs
The port is at Långnäsvägen 656 in 22630 Lumparland. From Mariehamn take road 3 to Långnäs and follow the Finnlines signs in the port; the port area has 50 parking spaces with no time limit. Without a car, you can reach the terminal on Ålandstrafiken bus 5 from Mariehamn. For daytime sailings, check-in opens two hours before departure: vehicles at the check-in booths, foot passengers at the Finnlines terminal. Arrive at least an hour before with a vehicle, or 30 minutes before on foot. For overnight sailings you check in on board; arrive at least 30 minutes before departure and show your booking confirmation and ID. Foot passengers sometimes board partly outdoors at night, so warm clothing helps. Finnlines sells tickets for the overnight sailing up to six hours before departure.
The crossing
Finnlines operates Finnsirius and Finncanopus, sister ships that entered service in 2023 with room for up to 1,100 passengers. On board you'll find restaurants, a bar, a duty-free shop, a sauna and a spa; card payment only. A cabin is required on the overnight sailing. In November 2026, Tallink Silja's Baltic Princess adds sailings on some days, taking just over six hours for the route; with Tallink Silja, registration closes 30 minutes before departure.
With a car, campervan, bike or dog
Cars, motorbikes and bicycles check in at the booths in the port; register larger vehicles with their dimensions when booking. More in the guide Travelling to Sweden with a campervan. Dogs travel without a pet cabin on the daytime sailing, but you need one overnight. A maximum of two animals is allowed per cabin, and dogs must be on a lead outside it. Arrival in Kapellskär and onward travel
The E18 starts in Kapellskär and leads via Norrtälje to Stockholm. Without a car, take SL buses 631 or 631X, which stop right at the port, towards Stockholm via Norrtälje.
