From Långnäs in eastern Åland to Kapellskär in Roslagen, the Finnlines ferry takes you across in around three and a half hours. It comes from Naantali in Finland and calls at Långnäs on its way to Sweden. You travel in the afternoon or in the middle of the night, by car, bike or on foot.
Departure in Långnäs
The port is at Långnäsvägen 656, 22630 Lumparland. From Mariehamn, take Route 3 to Långnäs and follow the Finnlines signs in the port; there are 50 parking spaces in the port area with no maximum stay. Without a car, you can reach the terminal on Ålandstrafiken bus 5 from Mariehamn. For daytime departures, check-in opens two hours before departure: vehicles at the check-in booths, foot passengers at the Finnlines terminal. Arrive at least one hour ahead with a vehicle, or 30 minutes ahead on foot. For night sailings, you check in on board; arrive at least 30 minutes before departure and show your booking confirmation and ID. At night, foot passengers sometimes board partly outdoors, so warm clothing helps. Finnlines only sells tickets for the night sailing up to six hours before departure.
The crossing
Finnlines operates Finnsirius and Finncanopus, sister ships that entered service in 2023 with room for up to 1,100 passengers. On board you'll find restaurants, a bar, a duty-free shop, a sauna and a spa; payment is by card only. A cabin is compulsory on the night sailing. In November 2026, the Baltic Princess from Tallink Silja adds sailings on selected days, taking just over six hours for the crossing; with Tallink Silja, check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.
By car, motorhome, bike or with a dog
Cars, motorbikes and bicycles check in at the booths in the port; larger vehicles should be registered with their dimensions when booking. More in the guide Travelling to Sweden by motorhome. Dogs travel without a pet cabin on the daytime sailing, but you'll need one at night. A maximum of two pets are allowed per cabin, and a lead is required outside the cabin. Arrival in Kapellskär and onward travel
The E18 starts in Kapellskär and runs via Norrtälje to Stockholm. Without a car, take SL buses 631 or 631X, which stop directly at the port, via Norrtälje towards Stockholm. The port's address is Kapellskär, 760 15 Gräddö; Finnlines and Tallink Silja check in via entrance C, while entrance B leads to the car park and the foot-passenger terminal. With Finnlines, check-in opens 2 hours before departure and closes 1 hour before. The terminal is open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. Finnlines sails twice daily, year-round: from Långnäs in the afternoon at 15:00 or 16:00, and at night at 03:55 Åland time, arriving in Kapellskär in the early evening or around 06:15 Swedish time respectively.
